Arch 468: The box
What is it?
Do you have a box marked DANGER - DO NOT TOUCH in your theatrical headspace? Are there elements of theatre that you're terrified to go near but wish you could master? Would you run a mile before directing something written in verse? Are you terrified of performing stories which don't have words? Do you wonder how Chekhov could ever be as funny as everyone says it should be?
Arch 468: The box is an opportunity to explore the stuff you are frightened of, in a safe environment, supported by other practitioners who will take a turn at addressing their own personal nemesis.
Arch 468: The box is not about giving you someone else’s answers, but instead offers you a creative community and the resources to answer your own questions through collective practice and exploration.
How does it work?
Think about what is in your box marked DANGER. Try to phrase it as a question.
Think about other theatre-makers you have encountered and found exciting; do they also have DANGER boxes? It doesn't matter if your danger box is completely different to theirs – this will actually make things more interesting.
Form a group of three practitioners. You all have questions which specifically address an area of theatre you’re scared of. You have a basic respect for each other and would like to learn more about how the others work. You can be directors, actors, choreographers, designers or any other species that makes theatre.
Think about how many other people you will need to help you explore these questions.
Find a week in August when you can all be free: during this week, you'll work on all three questions, so sometimes you'll be the facilitator and sometimes you'll be helping the others with their questions.
