Voicing is a workshop project to experiment with using specially-composed music to devise theatre, so that music is the backbone of the story.

The workshops will be led by composer Caroline Heslop and director Julie Osman (Resident Artist at Arch 468), working with a collaborative ensemble of actors, musicians and opera singers.

Caroline will be composing pieces of music especially for this project and Julie will be bringing 19th and 21st century verbatim text, to be used as the raw material for the devising process.

As part of the devising process, Caroline’s music will be played by two musicians:

•a viola player

•a clarinettist

and sung by two opera singers:

•a mezzo-soprano

•a baritone

We are looking for six actors to complete the ensemble.

We will be creating a world in which the inhabitants speak with varying voices:

•instrumental music

•sung words

•spoken words

•movement

By giving intensive attention in the devising process to all the disciplines in the room, we’ll integrate them, creating a short piece of music theatre.

Participants will expand their ways of working, to take into their own practice after the project; they will get to:

•experience new and challenging performance territory as part of a collaborative ensemble

•draw inspiration from artists in other disciplines

•develop a shared language for cross-discipline collaboration

•understand how music, language and movement can interweave in performance

•contribute to the intensive devising process

•use music to build a character

•develop their skills in handling text, movement and music simultaneously

•expand interpretive choices through performance dialogue with other disciplines

The project is free to attend: participants will need to commit to both workshop days, as the work will be cumulative & tailor-made for the individual performers.
